Watch out! HMRC has warned against tax fraud scammers.

Just when you think it can’t get much worse, some people are being scammed out of their savings by fraudsters posing as HMRC. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic HMRC has been warning people to stay vigilant against these tax fraudsters. They appear to be sending out emails and text messages to try and scam people out of their savings.

With HMRC currently processing tax refunds for the financial year 2017-2018 these fraudsters are taking advantage by sending emails and SMS messages to trick the public into this thinking they are entitled to a tax rebate. If you’re unlucky enough to receive one of these texts or emails they ask you for your personal and account details to carry out the scam.

The Treasury Minister Mel Stride has provided the following guidance for everyone to be aware of and follow:

  • HMRC only informs you about tax refunds through the post or through your pay via your employer.
  • All emails, text messages, or voicemail messages saying you have a tax refund are a scam.
  • Do not click on any links in these messages, and forward them to HMRC’s phishing email address and phone number.

Many of the emails are taking users to a dubious website where their details are entered and stolen. With over 2671 phishing sites already been taken down (as of March 2020), we’re urging everyone to be extra careful when receiving information regarding tax returns. HRMC have said they expect phishing threats to rise in the next few months.

Just remember HMRC will not ask for your PIN, password or Bank details. They will only contact you by post or by your employer and if you suspect foul play you can always double check by visiting the HRMC online guide.

We hope this advice helps you and your employees stay safe, please feel free to distribute and share to help keep people informed and aware of this scam.
