With some major software milestones coming in the new year, we wanted to offer a slim down summary for you to ensure you can remain up-to-date and compliant for 2017.


Windows 8’s End Of Mainstream Support

Announced back in January, and not ending officially until January 2018 you’ve now got just over 2 years to upgrade. The service packs have already stopped as of 1st of December, so ideally now’s the time to start to look around especially with the recently announced licensing price increases.

Microsoft Software Price Hikes

In October, Microsoft announced price increases of between 13 & 22% to come into effect in the New Year. This is directly related to the European Currency Markets – which were directly influenced by us leaving the EU. “To harmonise its prices for enterprise software and cloud services within the EU/ European Free Trade Agreement region” – basically the new prices will reflect the appreciation of the Euro of more than 21% since November this year. Similarly, HP, Sage & Pegasus have announced pricing increases in direct relation to the Euro.

Pegasus Opera II End-Of-Life

Pegasus have announced that their Opera II product will no longer be supported or tested on any future editions of Windows Server. Being over 15 years old – Opera II has had a good run, but its internal architecture is no longer compatible with recent technology and our uptake of the Cloud has moved many of us away from an on-site server setup. Getting support for the software won’t be the problem, it’s the security vulnerabilities in the Server software that will make running Opera II cost prohibitive in the future.

Sage 200 v2011 End-Of-Life

As with Pegasus, Sage have announced a retirement for the 2011 version of their SME page: Sage 200. In October, Sage 200 v2011 officially went into “Extended Support” and this will end entirely on 31st October 2017. What this means is that patches, service packs and legislation updates will no longer be released for this version of the software. Businesses running v2011 for their core financials face being out-of-date and will fail certain PCI & ISO compliancy tests.
